Community Foundations

A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity organized and operated for the long-term benefit of a defined geographic area. It enables people with philanthropic interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care about—immediately, or through their wills.

Community foundations helped to pioneer several models of giving that today we take for granted, including the donor-advised fund. Through donor-advised funds, donors can establish a charitable fund at the community foundation using a variety of assets. While the community foundation retains the ultimate authority over these funds, donors may recommend grants—in their name, if they choose—to nonprofit groups they want to support.

Current Membership Statistics
There are approximately 30 community foundations in the state of Wisconsin. Currently 27 community foundations are members of DFW, representing 99% of the community foundation assets in Wisconsin. Twenty-two member community foundations have have acheived national standards and collectively make up the Donors Forum's Certified Community Foundation Division.
